Captains of the Sands (Capitães da Areia), is based on the novel of the same name by Jorge Amado, that portrays the lives of a gang of street kids in 1930s Salvador. The novel is the Brazilian equivalent of Dickens’s Oliver Twist and was regarded as one of Amado’s socialist novels, due to the exposure of the lamentable social conditions of the poor. Director Cecília Amado, Jorge Amado’s granddaughter, makes a realistic yet poetic approach to the story of a savage but tender group of youths who strive against poverty, disease and abandonment in the magical Salvador.
Captains of the Sands won the Popular Vote Award at the 2012 International Film Festival of Punta Del Leste, and the Popular Vote Award in the 2012 SESC Best Films Festival. The soundtrack is by Carlinhos Brown, winner of 2 Latin Grammys.
All screenings are FREE but RSVP essential due to limited space.
No latecomers after 19:00.
