CLAW – Contemporary Latin American Writers Festival is a week-long celebration of the vibrant theatre talent of Latin America: a riveting and altogether different take on drama. CLAW will show three new Latin American plays, performed in English: Mona and I (world premiere) by Brazilian writer Rogerio Correa, directed by Victor Essescombines magic realism and radical politics. Set during the Belle Époque, it is an exploration of the theft of the Mona Lisa by a wannabe artist and what happens when the painting comes alive and challenges her abductor. Tales of Bed Sheets and Departure Lounges (world premiere) brings to the stage an adaptation of Venezuelan writer Montague Kobbé’s homonymous collection of flash fiction. Directed by Alvaro Flores, these brief snippets in and out of the lives of eight unrelated characters weave a seemingly arbitrary pattern with the longings and intimacy of complete strangers as they come into contact with one another in their ordinary lives. Turmoil by maverick Brazilian playwright Jô Bilac, directed by André Pink, unfolds as havoc is brought to Matias’ household when his sister and her mysterious companion Nataniel come to live with him and his wife Bianca. This physical tragicomedy is set in an OTT South American Jane Austenesque world. Presented by Dende Collective, it features live music, Flamenco and a tap dancing goat!
