Brave New Land (Brava Gente Brasilia) shows an attempt to survive by Brazilian natives Guaicuru against the European settlers. It is a historical drama based on a true event, the conquest of a Portuguese fortress by the Guaicurus in 1778 in Mato Grosso, a battle won by those who were destined to lose the war, in an effort to show their pride and their will to resist.
The Portuguese are marking the western limit of their South American domain in Mato Grosso. Fort Coimbra has been built on the margin of River Paraguay. Unfortunately for the Portuguese the indigenous inhabitants of the region are a warrior tribe, the Guaicurus, who have learned to tame and ride horses.

According to director Lucia Murat, this is a tale of “…two worlds that meet but don’t touch each other…” The building blocks of Brazilian colonial society are all there except for the African slave: the newly arrived European, the local mixed-race people and the indigenous tribes, with whom there can be no permanent accommodation, for there is too much at stake.
All screenings are FREE but RSVP essential due to limited space.
No latecomers after 19:00.
