What do Os Mutantes, Buena Vista Social Club and Nick Drake all have in common? All cult acts who were only discovered long after their due, it is perhaps Os Mutantes who have the most dramatic revival story of all.

Formed in 1965 by Arnaldo and Sergio Dias Baptista, teenage brothers from Sao Paulo, and Arnaldo’s girlfriend Rita Lee, Os Mutantes were Brazil’s most inventive and irreverent rock’n’roll group. The trio became the backing band for Tropicália, the avant-garde movement formed by the singers Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso in 1967, but in the mid-1970s the band fell apart – not least because the two brothers argued over, of all things, guitars.

They made their return in 2006, and have since been wowing crowds with their new-found vigour for live performances, not least at their sold out Village Underground show in 2015. We can’t wait to welcome them back for their first London show in three years. Opening the show will be London based songwriter, music arranger and guitarist Gui Tavares who, joined by percussionist Aluá Nascimento, will explore a wide range of energetic sounds from Maracatu to Congado to Baião to Samba, as well as songs from his vintage vinyl album Noite que Brincou de Lua recently reissued by Far Out Recordings.
